What is LAN Party OS?
LAN Party OS is a portable, bootable Linux USB stick preloaded with a library of classic LAN-era games. Every game is pre-installed, patched, and fixed to run on modern hardware, so there is no setup at the event: boot a PC from the USB, pick your name, and launch straight into a game. Known-good sticks can be cloned to spin up as many identical LAN stations as you need, and nothing requires an internet connection — it is built for fully offline play.
Capabilities
The core things the OS does to make a LAN party effortless.
Boot & Play
Boot any PC from the USB into a Linux desktop with every game as a ready-to-launch shortcut. No installs on the day.
One Name, Everywhere
Set your player name once at setup and it is propagated automatically into every supported game's config.
Any-Hardware Graphics
Moving a stick to a different PC resets only machine-specific video settings to a safe baseline, so games never inherit broken resolutions or renderers from the last machine.
Clone to Many Stations
A known-good master can be imaged onto more USB sticks, each getting a unique hostname and fresh per-machine state so clones never collide on the network.
Fully Offline
LAN games need minimal or no configuration and no internet. CD checks, phone-home updaters, and auto-updates are all removed so every clone stays identical.
Fast, Lean Boot
Trimmed services and a slimmed-down image mean a quick boot and no desktop bloat — it is a games appliance, not a general-purpose OS.
Games Library
Classic LAN titles pre-installed and verified for offline multiplayer. Each is patched to run cleanly under Linux/Wine on modern hardware.
Built-in Tools
The utilities bundled on the desktop to run the party itself.
Game Dashboard
A kiosk-style launcher listing every installed game with cover art, launched from one screen.
LAN Party Setup
The first-run tool to set your player name, which then flows into every supported game automatically.
LAN Party Chat
A built-in chat client for coordinating across the room during the event.
TeamSpeak 3
Voice comms bundled in for team coordination over the LAN.
Clone This USB
A desktop tool to image a known-good master onto more sticks and produce additional LAN stations.
Rolling Credits
A full-screen credits roll set to the LAN Party OS theme song — because every good party needs a finale.
Under the Hood
The technical foundations that make it portable and reliable.
Ubuntu + Cinnamon
A lightweight Linux desktop base, slimmed down to a games appliance with no office apps or browser bloat.
Wine & Proton Prefixes
Each Windows game runs in its own isolated Wine prefix; one game uses GE-Proton for its HD mod.
Hardware Fingerprinting
The OS detects when a stick has moved to a new PC and resets only the video settings that would otherwise break.
CD-Key Pools
Games that reject shared serials on a LAN draw a unique key per station from a managed pool.
No Phone-Home
Updater call-outs and auto-updates are blocked so every clone stays byte-for-byte consistent, online or off.
Unique Clone Identity
Each cloned stick gets its own hostname and fresh per-machine state to avoid network collisions.
